So you've invited all your family and friends over for a back yard movie night. The drinks are flowing, BBQ is sizzling and the sun is setting as your trailers start. But what about the great ye olde chair harvesting ritual? Old, small, wonky (and we're not talking about grandpa)...if it stands then it usually makes the cut in the mad dash for lawn chairs. But it doesn't have to be this way.
It's garden party season and one of the crucial aspects of hosting is making sure everyone's comfortable, with no squeaky lounger to interrupt the climactic drama of your movie. From hammocks to stackable chairs, we have tonnes of ideas on seating for your guests. Whether you want pocket friendly seating or want to make sure everyone truly sits back and relaxes, we've got in covered.
Probably the ultimate in reclining and melting your cares away. The great thing about garden hammocks is they're super easy to set up as they can come with stands that you can assemble or pack away. There's tonnes of hammock gear on the market in so many styles and fabrics that they're durable to leave up through winter. If your movie just isn't doing it for you, it doubles up at night as the perfect position for star gazing. For us outdoorsy folk, it can't get better than that.
2. Bean Bag Chairs
Super easy to move around to get that perfect viewing spot, bean bag chairs still haven't gone out of style. They also allow the audience in the front to sit lower without interrupting the view for the guests at the back. Outdoor bean bag chairs are also perfect for the kids to wriggle around and spill their drinks as they're wipe clean! From the super cheap to the ultra fancy body hugging bean bag chairs, there's a shape for every guest.
3. Macrame Rope Swing Chairs
You've probably seen many DIY tutorials and videos on how to make your own macrame swing or hammock. But who has the time? All those knots and twists are already making me dizzy. Plus you can pick them up for really reasonable prices. With really soft woven cotton, you can swing away in the trees to your hearts content, feeling the breeze and knowing you made the right choice moving your home cinema outside. Not only are they incredibly comfy, they look super chic, right?
4. Rope Swing
Maybe not the number one choice for the adults, but the kids will love feeling like they have their own special seat unlike everyone else. If you're lucky enough, for little to nothing you can fashion some rope and wood to a tree in your yard. And if not, get planting and in 10 years you can have the perfect seat! Not only will it be a great impromptu spot for the kids, it will bring many memories and hours of fun after the movie has ended.
5. Stackable/Folding Lawn Chairs
Sowords got out that you have the best back yard cinema set up on your street, and everyone plus their aunt wants to come over. What do you do? Pulling out all of your nice indoor furniture may not be the answer. Buying a set of stackable lawn chairs means you can store away an abundance of seating in a very small amount of space. Then you can pull it out when needed, making sure everyone has a spot to perch on. There's lots of great cheap options made from metal or plastic that are also easy to take care of. Plus what's stopping you from jazzing them up yourself? Get the family together to paint and tie colorful ribbons to your chairs to make them pop.
6. Back Yard Camping
Another great DIY idea is to get out your tent and set up camp in your back yard. You'll love the great outdoors feel as though you've transported to the middle of no where and can curl up with a good movie. Set it up with lots of blankets, snacks and pillows to have the ultimate sleepover with the kids or your friends. If you don't own your own tent, or really don't like the idea of messing around with poles and instructions then there are always cheap pop up alternatives. You can quickly pop open your camping experience and pack it away if your real bed starts calling!
7. Floor Cushions
Much like bean bag chairs, floor cushions are incredibly versatile. You can stack them, add them to garden furniture and even change the covers to suit your theme. Removable covers also mean they can easily be washed after a night in your back yard and if you've got the skills you can make your own! They give the ultimate laid back vibe in your yard, allowing everyone to cosy up together in your very own pillow fort.
8. Sofa Bed
One look at this sofa bed and I'm ready to dive in. Plus, you can save on buying multiple chairs as you can pile the whole family on board. If you love cuddling up to watch your movies with your kids, partner or dog (no judgement here), sofa beds offer it in spades. This particular outdoor sofa bed breaks apart into 4 seats and a table too, nifty!
9. Drive In Movie Night
One of my personal favorite ideas is the drive in movie. Tell your guests to B.Y.O.C on the invitation (bring your own car!) and that's the seating sorted. Pop open the back if you've got an extra spacious car or van, place a load of blankets and pillows and you have the perfect spot to recline in familiar surroundings. There's no need to pack away or set up your seating arrangement either, but ideally set up somewhere where the lawn isn't too nice.
10. Teepee Tent
We'll end on another great choice for the kids. You can buy pre made materials or have a go yourself at building a mini teepee to keep the kids quiet. Buy or source some long pieces of wood and sheet material and get to playing around with tying it together. This can be a fun project for everyone to get involved, as well as creating a warm retreat inside, with a peep hole to watch your movie through.
